The Inquiry Room

A word about the after-meeting. I feel very strongly that the best method of conducting an after-meeting is that of making it an after-meeting rather than a continuance of the first meeting. That runs counter to many ideas. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. Personally I do not like an after-meeting at which any are unwillingly present. I ask that all those who would like to stay behind do so. I never make an appeal (or very rarely under pressure of circumstances) until I have given an opportunity to everybody to go who desires to do so. It is sometimes said that by such means we miss so many men upon whom the Spirit of God has put His constraint. I do not believe it, and I would rather have a dozen people constrained, convicted, and converted, than a hundred caught in some emotional movement, in which movement there was no real depth of conviction and result. The after-meeting is to give men and women an opportunity to decide for Christ and confess Him immediately and openly. Here occurs the place for enquiry room work. GCM

After reading Dr. Morgan's work on evangelism (Available at gcampbellmorgan.com) I personally prefer the after-meeting to the altar call. The underlined quote is quite powerful. Again, as stated above, let ever man be fully persuaded in his own mind. MA

The Rag-picker and the Mayor

Dr. Morgan was conducting some special meetings in a town in the midlands and there came into the inquiry room a rag-picker-a great, gaunt, old man who had grown hoary in the service of sin and Satan. But God had shown him his heart hunger, and there, in that inquiry room, the man knelt and Dr. Morgan knelt by his side and he felt quite at home, as he spoke to him of the blood that cleanseth from all sin. Then someone touched him on the shoulder, and said: "Won't you speak to this man?"

He looked around, and there, kneeling next to him was the mayor of the city, a man about the same age as the rag-picker, but one who had about him all the marks of position, culture and refinement. Dr. Morgan happened to know that, six weeks before, the mayor had sent this rag-picker to prison, to do a month's hard labour. The man had got out a fortnight before, and here he was, side by side with the mayor! Dr. Morgan had to turn from the rag-picker, and talk to the chief magistrate. Dr. Morgan testified that the same message was sufficient in this case also. And the most blessed part of it was, that when the mayor got up from his knees he went over to the other man and said, "Well, the last time we met, it was not here." The old fellow looked up. He had no idea who it was that addressed him. When he found out he said: "No: and we never shall meet where we met last time, thank God!"
